- HE machines don't use enough water to clean cloth diapers. Period. Think about it. You load in your diapers that are full of urine. The machine adds a little bit of water and detergent, you're essentially washing your diapers in diluted urine, some of which will remain in your diapers. Keep in mind that as babies grow, they produce more urine. Diapers only stink after washing if something is left behind.
- Wash diapers at least every other day, no longer. Have you ever forgotten a batch of damp towels in the washer? No way to completely remove the smell. Diapers that sit for days will develop an awful smell that you'll never remove completely.
- Our instructions are clear. A complete cold water wash cycle first, to remove most of the waste and prevent staining. Follow with a warm or hot water (not cold) wash with detergent, another complete cycle. Your diapers will be clean and fresh. If you have an old fashioned top loading washer, you can try a cold water rinse/spin cycle, followed by a complete warm/hot water wash cycle.
- Did you know that manufacturer's cold water wash is tested at about 70 degrees? Our groundwater this morning in Michigan was 44 degrees, that's a big difference! Our warm water wash water came in at 74 degrees- the same as the manufacturer's cold water. Use warm or hot water for your second wash through, your diapers will be cleaner.
We get emails daily from people complaining of stinky diapers after washing- they usually go something like this:
Them- Our diapers have a terrible ammonia smell after washing, what am I doing wrong?
Me- Do you have an HE machine?
Them- Yes! How did you know?
Me- HE machines don't use enough water to thoroughly clean diapers...
Them- Oh! But our washer was designed to work with less water. It's not efficient to run two wash cycles. I've found a way to trick the machine into using more water.
Me- Run two complete cycles, cold first with no detergent, then warm/hot with detergent, your diapers will be clean & fresh!
Them- Maybe I'll try an extra rinse at the end. I think I need to strip my diapers. I'll add more soap, that will work. I'll try anything but following the directions, thanks for your help!
